We are Advocates for Senior Care on the Upper Sunshine Coast — a group of local people who believe our community can do better for its seniors.

The townhall will shine a spotlight on the issues and concerns in seniors care in Powell River. A panel of about five people who know these issues firsthand will situate the problems, share information, and offer insight — and the questions will come from you, the community.

Two problems we can't look away from

Caught between hospital and long-term care

When a senior no longer needs hospital treatment but can't yet manage at home, the next step should be a bed in an appropriate long-term care facility. In Powell River, those beds too often cannot be found — so seniors remain in hospital for weeks or months.

Many are held in beds lining the corridors, or moved from room to room as space opens up. For people living with dementia, the disruption and confusion are especially hard to bear.

We are bringing this to the townhall not just to name the problem, but to seek discussion of real solutions.

Many helping hands, working apart

Powell River is fortunate: organizations like Kiwanis, LIFT, the Gerry Grey Centre and others already provide a wide range of services to seniors. But resources and funds are scarce, and without better coordination, effort is duplicated in some places and missing in others.

The townhall is a chance to support that coordination — so every dollar and every volunteer hour goes as far as it can for the seniors who need it.

What to expect at the townhall

  • A knowledgeable panel. About five people who can situate the issues and provide information and insight to address the community's concerns.
  • Your questions, front and centre. We're gathering questions ahead of the meeting so the most pressing community concerns are sure to be covered.
  • A focus on solutions. The goal isn't only to describe what's wrong — it's to start fixing it, together.
